Argentinean perfection: Cluzel looks back on ‘perfect’ and ‘incredible’ weekend
Jules Cluzel has won three of the last four races in WorldSSP after an Argentinean double on WorldSSP’s return to San Juan Villicum
Heading into the Motul Argentinean Round, only one rider from the FIM Supersport World Championship had managed to record victories at the Circuito San Juan Villicum circuit with Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) winning the previous two races held in 2018 and 2019, and he came into the 2021 edition on the back of an excellent weekend at Portimao with a first and a second place.
With form on his side and a perfect record to maintain in Argentina, Cluzel headed to Argentina and topped every single session except Free Practice 1, where he had an early-session crash, taking pole position in Tissot Superpole and two race victories to keep up his perfect record. He also claimed two fastest laps in the race, setting a new lap record to go with his pole lap record set in Superpole.
In both races, Cluzel came under initial pressure from Turkish star Can Öncü (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) but was able to break away as he claimed two more victories, taking his career tally to 23 wins while he has now won three of the last four races in WorldSSP, moving up to fourth in the Championship standings with two races left in 2021.
Commenting on his weekend, which was the first WorldSSP double for both GMT94 and Cluzel, the Frenchman said: “It was the perfect weekend! I started really strongly. I had a crash after two laps so missed the first practice but then in FP2 I was really strong. We continued that in Superpole, and Race 1 was perfect, Race 2 was even better. Just Öncü pushed so hard. Congratulations to him because he made a big improvement this season and also this weekend. He pushed me over, not my limit, but I was pushing to the maximum to just try to escape a little bit. When I decided to go, I did it perfectly at the end of the race, I just put a gap. It was cool. When I was pushing, I was going faster. When I was slowing down, I was still fast. It’s a perfect weekend, let’s enjoy it. We nearly won the last four races. Incredible and we’re finishing a difficult season in a good way.”
Team Manager Christophe Guyot added: "Jules Cluzel and the GMT94 team had a great weekend here in Argentina. The bad luck of the beginning of the season is now behind us. We can be proud of how far we have come up to this round in Argentina. The whole team is savouring this special moment, after having dominated the weekend from start to finish.”
